The Myth That Cost You 32% Last Year: 'The Stock Market Is Only for Rich People'

By AlphaEx Editorial

Let's kill the excuse you've been hiding behind

You've said it. Maybe out loud, maybe just in your head every time a friend brags about their portfolio: "The stock market is for rich people. Not me."

It sounds smart. It sounds humble. It's also completely, verifiably wrong — and in 2025 the data didn't just poke a hole in the myth, it torched it.

Here's the uncomfortable truth for the skeptics: while you were waiting for permission, everyday people were quietly building wealth. This post is the myth-busting you didn't ask for. Read it, then decide if sitting out is still the "safe" move.

Myth #1: "You need to be rich to get in"

On January 2, 2026, the numbers landed: retail investors — regular people, not hedge funds — added roughly $1.3 billion to U.S. markets every single day in the first half of 2025. That's up 32.6% year-over-year.

And who's doing it? Not just the wealthy. 37% of 25-year-olds now hold investments. Twenty-five. Most of them aren't rich — they just stopped believing the myth before you did.

Financial educator Thomas Maluck put it plainly back on June 6, 2025: the idea that brokerages "refuse service" to lower-income people or bury them in prohibitive fees is a misconception, not reality. We live in the zero-fee brokerage era. Funds like Vanguard's VOO (S&P 500) give you a sliver of 500 of America's biggest companies for the price of a coffee.

The gate you think exists? It was removed years ago. You just never walked through it.

Myth #2: "I'll wait for the right time"

This is the most expensive sentence in personal finance.

Back on December 20, 2024, the reality check came in: even professional investors with decades of experience can't reliably time the market. They can't nail the perfect entry. They can't call the perfect exit. If the pros can't do it, the "I'll just wait for the dip" strategy isn't caution — it's a fantasy that quietly costs you real gains.

Consider what "waiting" looked like. Roughly 30 million new retail investors opened brokerage accounts in just two years, pushing retail's share of equity trading volume to 25% — nearly double the previous decade's rate. Thirty million people didn't wait for a starting gun. They just started.

Myth #3: "Betting against the crowd is the smart-money play"

Ah, the contrarian's favorite flex: "Everyone's bullish, so I'll be the clever one sitting it out."

Here's the twist. On January 27, 2026, sentiment surveys showed institutional and retail bullishness running hot into 2026 — and betting against that crowd has, in the words of the data, "so far proven to be a failed strategy." The people who "cleverly" shorted optimism got burned.

But contrarianism CAN work — when it's grounded in reality, not vibes. Look at REITs. Real estate investment trusts (tracked by VNQ) were declared dead money for years thanks to work-from-home fears and pandemic-era setbacks. The consensus said avoid them. Then on December 22, 2025, the reversal was confirmed: the contrarian bet ON beaten-down REITs paid off as the trade turned.

The lesson isn't "always fight the crowd." It's this: sitting on the sidelines isn't a position — it's a loss with extra steps.

What this actually means for you

Strip away the myths and here's what's left:

  • You don't need to be rich. Zero-fee investing and fractional shares mean any amount works.
  • You don't need perfect timing. The pros can't time it — you're not "behind," you're just starting.
  • You don't need to be a genius contrarian. The simplest move — owning a broad slice of the market via SPY or VOO — has quietly beaten the doubters.

The 30 million people who started before you weren't smarter or richer. They just stopped collecting reasons to wait.

How to buy this on AlphaEx

On AlphaEx, you buy real stocks and ETFs — Apple, Tesla, NVIDIA, plus market building blocks like SPY, VOO and VNQ — and you can start with whatever you've got.

  • 1. Create your accountSign up on AlphaEx in a couple of minutes.
  • 2. Deposit any amount — no rich-guy minimum. Start small if that feels safer.
  • 3. Search the stock — type SPY, VOO, or VNQ into the search bar.
  • 4. Tap Buy — own a real, fractional slice from your first dollar.
  • 5. Track your profit live — watch your position move in real time on your dashboard.
  • 6. Sell to rebalance — take profits or adjust whenever it suits you. You're in control.

Why start with the boring, broad names?

Because SPY and VOO spread your money across hundreds of companies, and dividend-paying holdings can drip passive income into your account while you sleep. It's the same simple move those 30 million new investors made — no genius required.

The doubters had a great 2025. You didn't have to miss it.

Every myth in this post has an expiration date, and it already passed. "Only rich people invest" died the day zero-fee brokerages opened. "Wait for the right time" died the day the pros admitted they can't time it either. And "stay on the sidelines to be safe" died the moment the sidelines became the most expensive seat in the house.

You can keep the excuse, or you can keep the gains. Not both.

The REITs point cuts both ways though. Plenty of people bailed on VNQ in 2022 and missed the whole recovery by the time it "got confirmed" in December.
